WhatsApp, Facebook & Instagram Back Online After Six Hours of Global Outage

What began as a seemingly innocent Facebook outage, quickly spiralled into what many are now calling "the Facebook Apocalypse." What's more, this global outage isn't just affecting Facebook users — WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger were all knocked offline for over six hours.

Facebook has not yet pinpointed the cause of this rare global outage; however, early reports indicate that it could be due to a "change in configuration" to the backbone routers that coordinate network traffic between the company's data centres. It was at 11:24am (EST) that these routers rebooted and caused a cascading effect which knocked out all of the company's services.

At 1:21am (EST) Facebook began to issue a statement on their official blog. "We're currently experiencing an issue that means some people are unable to reach the site. We're working as quickly as we can to resolve the problem. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause."

At 4:41am (EST) Facebook confirmed that the site was back online, and that engineers were continuing to work on the issue. "We're very sorry for the inconvenience and we'll update you shortly."

The issues at hand continue to affect users across all six of Facebook's core products: mobile app, desktop version, Messenger app, WhatsApp mobile app, Instagram mobile app and desktop version.

By 3:57am (EST) it was reported that Facebook's services had been back online for over two hours — and the official Twitter handle confirmed that the company was working to restore full functionality. "We're continuing to investigate this issue and we're working towards a full recovery."

At 8:00am (EST) WhatsApp's status page confirmed that their service had been restored, and was available across web, iOS and Android platforms. "WhatsApp service has been restored. We apologize for the inconvenience."

It wasn't until 4:36pm (EST) though, that Facebook confirmed they were fully recovered from this technical difficulty — and no information as to the cause of the outage was released.

Upon restoration, several users reported issues with the Messenger app. Only a small number of Facebook users actually experienced any problems at all — but the bulk of the reports for this outage have come from those using Messenger and WhatsApp.

There's no word yet on how many users were affected by today's outage, but to find out if your Facebook account is "completely offline," you can test your site status here.

More than 100 million people were impacted by the outage.

Facebook announced that WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram were now back up and running. "Our engineers have identified the issue and are working to resolve the problem as soon as possible," a spokesperson said in an emailed statement. The outage comes after a whistleblower said that the world's largest social network is prioritizing profits over users' safety.

WhatsApp

WhatsApp said its engineers determined the problem originated with a networking issue that interrupted communications between its data centers. The outage comes after a whistleblower said that the world's largest social network is prioritizing profits over users' safety.

The outage hit WhatsApp users across the globe, causing problems with calls and messages. Facebook and Instagram also reported that some services were down due to the WhatsApp disruption.

WhatsApp has more than 1 billion users, but has shied away from advertising and become a model for free messaging among consumers and businesses alike.

Facebook

Facebook, reconnected to the global internet early on Tuesday, 5 October, morning after being down for nearly six hours. According to Bloomberg, Zuckerberg's personal wealth fell by more than $6 billion in the hours the three social media platforms were down.

In a rare turn of events during one of their worst-ever outages that lasted from around 9 p.m. Monday to 3 a.m. Sunday EST on Monday, Zuckerberg's net worth dropped as his company's stock dipped 2%. Within those six hours many people had no access to Facebook and Instagram and other services offered by the social media juggernaut including Messenger and WhatsApp for periods of time as Facebook tried their best to fix them first before opening them back up again...
